- General Survey of Hangzhou
Hangzhou located on the southeast coast of China, is a metropolis only next to Shanghai in the Yangze River Delta, the capital and economic, political and cultural center of Zhejiang Province. Renowned as one of the “Seven Ancient Cities in China” and a world famous tourist resort, Hangzhou enjoys global reputations as “City of Paradise and Civilization”, “Home of Silk and Tea”, and “Wealthy Land”.
Hangzhou has a long history of civilization. Early in the Neolithic Age four to five thousand years ago, there were already intellectualized human living and breeding in this area, where the Civilization of Liangzhu was born. Since then the City of Hangzhou has existed for more than 2,200 years. In the South Song Dynasty, China’s capital was founded in Hangzhou, which was renamed Lin’an then, the center of politics, economy and culture in China. In his travels, Marco Polo, a great Italian traveler in the 13th Century, called Hangzhou “Without doubt the finest and most splendid city in the world”.
As a modern city, Hangzhou is also working hard to improve the environment and traffic for investment, advertising its welcome of “Blue Sky, Clear Water, Green Plants, and Quiet Environment”. In the past five years, Hangzhou was Awarded such honorary titles as National Environmental Protection Model City, China Habitat Prize, UN Habitat Prize and International Garden City and so on.

The West Lake Pearl legend, the love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, tragedy of White Snake Lady and Mr. Xu Xian, the aquatic wedding ceremony, fish lanterns, lotus lanterns, revolving lanterns, dragon dance, lion dance, stilted show, etc., all have a long history.
